The 8/6 Roster: Cycle, Hours, Days Home and the Travel Catch

Eight days on, six days off, repeat. The 8/6 became the compromise swing of the last decade in Australian resources, and it is the pattern most often reached for when a 2/1 is losing people and even time costs too much to staff.
It is also a pattern where the headline numbers and the lived numbers differ more than most. This covers what an 8/6 actually works out to, why your weekends are decided before the first shift, and the travel arithmetic that makes it feel shorter than it reads.

The arithmetic
An 8/6 is a 14-day cycle, which is the fact that drives everything else about it.

The 48-hour average is the number worth sitting with. On 12-hour shifts, eight days is 96 hours inside a fortnight, which is 48 a week averaged across the cycle. That is comfortably above a standard week, and it is why the 8/6 pays well and why fatigue management is not optional on it.

Why your weekends are decided on day one
This is the part that surprises people, and it is pure arithmetic.
A 14-day cycle is exactly two weeks. That means the pattern lands on the same weekdays every cycle, forever. Your swing does not drift. Whatever weekday you start on, you will still be starting on that weekday next year.
The consequence is that full weekends off are all or nothing. Six consecutive days off contains both a Saturday and a Sunday for five of the seven possible start days. For the other two it does not:
- A break starting Monday runs Monday to Saturday. You get the Saturday, never the Sunday.
- A break starting Sunday runs Sunday to Friday. You get the Sunday, never the Saturday.
So an 8/6 worker gets either 26 full weekends a year or none at all, decided entirely by which weekday the roster happened to start on. There is no in-between, and nobody notices at the planning stage because on a whiteboard every cycle looks identical.
If you are setting up a new 8/6 crew, that is a free win: choose a start day that puts a full weekend in the break. If you are already running one and your crews are grumbling about never getting a weekend, this is probably why, and it is fixable only by shifting the whole cycle.
The same logic applies to every pattern whose cycle divides by seven, which is most of them. The 2/1 at 21 days and the even-time patterns at 14 and 28 all lock their weekdays the same way.
The travel catch
Compare an 8/6 to a 2/1 and the home time looks decisive: about 156 days against about 120. Thirty-six extra days a year at home is a real difference and it is why the pattern exists.
The catch is that those days arrive in smaller parcels, and each parcel has travel on both ends.

An 8/6 worker flies 26 times a year. A 2/1 worker flies 17. That is nine extra round trips, and on a Perth to Pilbara commute a travel day is most of a day: the drive, the terminal, the flight, the bus, the camp check-in. Do that at both ends of a six-day break and the break is closer to four usable days.
None of which makes the 8/6 a bad pattern. It makes the comparison more honest than “156 versus 120”. If your workforce is DIDO or the flight is short, the travel penalty is small and the 8/6 is excellent. Fatigue: eight consecutive twelves
Eight 12-hour shifts back to back is the part a fatigue specialist looks at first, and it is where the 8/6 sits better than a 2/1 and worse than even time.
Fatigue accumulates across a swing. The eighth consecutive 12-hour shift is not the same as the first, particularly on nights, and particularly when travel sits on either end of the block. Safe Work Australia treats fatigue as a hazard subject to the same identify, assess and control duty as anything else on site, which means the roster pattern itself is a control you have chosen.
The scale is worth stating plainly. The Road Safety Commission of Western Australia puts being awake for 17 to 19 hours on a par with a blood alcohol reading of 0.05. That is the mechanism behind the rules, and it is why the drive home after the last shift of a swing is the one that worries people who study this.
Practically, an 8/6 needs the same controls as any swing pattern:
- Rolling hour limits across 7, 14 and 28 days, not just per shift
- Minimum breaks between shifts, and a longer one after a run of nights
- A cap on consecutive shifts that the roster actually enforces
- Attention to changeover day, where travel and a shift can collide

What an 8/6 asks of your rostering system
Weekly rostering tools handle an 8/6 badly, and the reason is structural rather than a missing feature. A 14-day cycle does not fit inside a Monday-to-Sunday grid, so a crew’s fortnight straddles two of whatever unit the software thinks in. Everything downstream inherits that mismatch.
What the pattern actually needs:
- The pattern as an object, built once and rolled forward for a year, rather than a fortnight copied and pasted
- Crews assigned to the pattern, so a change to the pattern moves everybody on it
- Cumulative hours across sites, since the 48-hour average only means anything if it counts every shift a person worked, including ones booked by another coordinator
- Changeover day handled properly, with travel and the first or last shift treated as the same day’s business
- Fatigue rules evaluated at booking, not reported afterwards

What an 8/6 costs to staff
The worker-side numbers are only half the picture. The other half is how many people you need to hold one seat open continuously, and that is where the pattern’s reputation as a compromise comes from.
Divide the cycle length by the days worked in it and you get the crew factor, the number of people required per position:

Twenty positions on a 2/1 needs about 30 people. The same twenty on an 8/6 needs 35. On even time it needs 40. That single column explains most of the industry’s rostering politics: even time is what workers want and what costs a third more in headcount than a 2/1, and the 8/6 sits deliberately in between.
The crew factor is a floor rather than an estimate. It assumes nobody takes annual leave, gets sick, attends training or leaves. Real establishments carry a margin on top, which is why the gap between an 8/6 and even time in practice is usually wider than the table suggests.
Who runs an 8/6, and why
The 8/6 turns up where the operation needs continuous coverage and the labour market has enough leverage to demand more home time than a 2/1 offers, but the business cannot absorb the crew count that even time requires.
That describes a lot of Australian mining services, drilling and maintenance contracting. It also describes operations that moved off a 2/1 during a tight labour market and found the retention improvement outweighed the extra flights. Where it fits badly: short-duration campaigns where the cycle never completes, operations with long interstate commutes where the travel penalty compounds, and any site where the eighth consecutive night is doing real work in the risk assessment.
